I'd like to slit hairs a bit if I may.... the distance from your audience isn't a technological thing so much as a mental perspective (for lack of a better term).
Yes, a technical ability with the technology you're using is important but not as important as your ability to connect with what the audience needs to know. Tell them the wrong things in the wrong way and no techology is going to save you! S
Thanks for your comments Simon and please feel free to slit hairs or did you mean split hairs. Not a criticism on your syntax but a poor attempt by me to illustrate how technology can distort the meaning of our message
I agree with you wholeheartedly. If we are too reliant on technology (power point, autocue, video messaging etc) or we are not comfortable in using these facilities the emotional connection with our audience is lost. I am sure you have seen, as I have, a perfectly good presentation fail because the speaker did not engaged with their audience or understood what their audience wanted to hear. When we can ¬see the 'whites' of their eyes, if we have sensory awareness, we can adapt our style of delivery to reengage with them. However, we now live in an age of webcasting and podcasting and that mode of communication needs a high level of expertise. On QVC I sell to an invisible audience and that is all about making an emotional connection. I wonder how many CEO’s and CFO’s or Executives appreciate that is what they need to do also? Dexter |
